In this series, we're crafting a custom sound palette for a fictional Netflix-style TV show – Shifting Tides – set in 1980s Tokyo at the height of the financial boom.
Stepping into the role of the TV series composers, we take you behind the scenes as we build a cinematic sound palette from scratch. We'll design signature sounds, character themes and essential composer tools – everything we need to create a compelling TV score.
And the best part? We’ll be turning it all into a powerful, fully featured FREE virtual instrument, available for you to download at the end of the project.
In episode one we created the treatment for 'Shifting Tides' – the storyline, the characters, the locations – from which we started to build the sonic palette.
In our just released episode two, we take a deep dive into character development, explore rich new settings (including Tokyo’s underground nightlife and a mysterious countryside retreat), and start designing the emotional heart of our score: a custom string ensemble with a twist.
Highlights include:
- Building playable ensemble string patches that morph from intimate to cinematic and dramatic.
- Programming unison doubling and dynamic crossfades in Kontakt.
- Augmenting acoustic strings with OB-6 synth strings for a unique hybrid sound.
