Flickering

A technique of our own invention – the name says it all! These consist of long sustained notes where each musician in the section randomly plays a quarter tone acciaccatura.

The result is an unsettled, shimmering texture that feels alive and unpredictable. It's a natural fit for tension and unease, but depending on your harmonic context, it can also take on a haunting, otherworldly beauty.

Ricochet Gestures

This one is harder to put into words – which is perhaps the best sign that it's something genuinely new.

These are long, non-looping articulations in which each player independently introduces a ricochet texture: beginning slowly, evolving into a scratchy, rhythmic flutter, and eventually fading away. The overall effect is organic and unpredictable – a texture that shifts constantly beneath the surface.

Dynamic (Celli + Bass only)

A refined companion to the Dynamic articulation in Movimento Strings. Each player performs independent crescendos and decrescendos but here the shifts are slower and more understated, producing a gentle, barely-there undulation that works beautifully in delicate or introspective passages.

Dynamic Flautando (Violins 2 and Celli + Bass only)

The same independent dynamic movement, now combined with flautando playing. The bow moves closer to the fingerboard, softening the tone and adding an airy, veiled quality to the gradual swell and fade of each player.

Includes all the above, with each articulation rendered into a ready-to-play mix that sounds great right out of the box. Simply load any of the 20 included patches (which include single section and full ensemble patches) and start writing immediately.

Professional Version: Multiple Mic Positions

Professional version users get access to multiple microphone perspectives for each articulation:

Decca - The main orchestral perspective – balanced, natural and cinematic.

Wide - A wider room perspective that expands the stereo image and adds a sense of space.

Section Overheads - Captured with a stereo pair of ribbon microphones for additional warmth and detail.

Close Microphones - For the Celli + Bass patch, two close mic variants are provided so you can emphasise either the cello or the bass in the mix. In Soundbox, these signals can be blended using the standard mixer or morphed using the Vector tab, offering deep control over the spatial character of the ensemble.

Professional Version: The EXTRA Pass

For the violas and celli + bass articulations, we recorded a second performance pass – ‘EXTRA’.

For this pass, the musicians were seated further back on the scoring stage, as if sitting in a different row. The material was also performed 8 BPM slower than the original pass, subtly changing phrasing and timing.

When blended with the original recordings, this pass effectively adds six more players to the ensemble, creating a larger, richer and more cinematic string sound.

You can use it in two ways: Load the regular and EXTRA patches on different tracks and blend them freely in your DAW. Or, if you don’t need control over the separate mic positions, you can use the Layered patches, where the second pass is faded in with the mod wheel.

It’s a powerful way to expand the ensemble while keeping everything organic and natural-sounding.
