Sam Esmail’s Homecoming had my attention as soon as I read this Indiewire article.
After reading the article, I was sure the series was bound to piss off a lot of composers on forums, Facebook groups, etc. - and boy, was I right!
The thing is, I liked the way non-original score was used in Mr. Robot (another genius product by Sam Esmail) together with the fantastic original soundtrack by Mac Quayle and you know what? Now that I finished the series, I can say it, I loved it in Homecoming too.
There is a freshness in these aural references (together with the visual ones) that was just stunning to my ears.
I want to think a bit more about it before saying if I actually missed having an original score or not and if the combination of such different scores lacked a sense of unity, but my first impression was: wow!
